🇬🇧 Fado means fate. A musical expression of strong emotions – love, loss, melancholy and longing.
A Portuguese song/music form that is traditionally performed to harmony-based accompaniment by traditional Spanish guitar and Portuguese guitar and soloist. The music has been known since the early 19th century, and in 2011 was listed on UNESCO’s list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
Tromsø has a fantastic music scene, with performers in most genres. But so far no one has ventured into the world of fado.
Britt Eva Løkkemo is one of several talented vocalists in Tromsø. She has previously made very good interpretations of Edith Piaf, and also achieved great success with Piaf in Northern Norwegian, translated by author and translator Ragnar Olsen. Several years ago, Britt Eva was challenged to explore the world of fado. Perhaps it was after Mariza’s concert in 2003 at KulturHuset in Tromsø that the then director of the cultural center, Nora Kiil, thought that the passion that Britt Eva put into her interpretations of Piaf could be transferred and included in a fado project?
Britt Eva has not been ready to take on that challenge, until now. The Spelt music club was excited by the idea. They have already organized two fado concerts, and will now act as the organizer of Fado in Northern Norwegian.
Britt Eva has invited Marit Sandvik, known for her award-winning jazz voice and her long-standing love of Brazilian music, to join her in the world of fado.
During this year’s Tromsø World Festival, we will get the result of this collaboration – Fado in Northern Norwegian.
We will be presented with a wide selection of songs, both traditional fado and fado from artists with a more modern tone expression. Ragnar Olsen has translated and rewritten several of the song lyrics. So here it will be fado in both the original language Portuguese and in Northern Norwegian.

Knut Erik Sundquist – double bass
The performers have a goal of putting their own mark on the music by giving it a personal interpretation, both in terms of instrumentation, arrangement and expression.
This will simply be – Fado in Northern Norwegian!
The concert is a collaboration between Viseklubben Spelt, Tromsø World Festival and Scene Nord.
